UWOL: Quest for Money is an arcade-style platformer originally created for the ZX Spectrum before being ported to the Sega Mega Drive and several other systems following its success in the homebrew scene. The gameplay is built around compact single-screen stages where players collect coins, avoid enemies, and move quickly between platform layers, with wraparound screen movement similar to classic arcade games like Mario Bros..
Each stage is short but structured around learning enemy patterns and optimizing movement. A ghost enemy appears once the timer runs out, increasing pressure with less predictable behavior. Progression is non-linear: after clearing stages, players choose their own path through a pyramid-shaped level structure, unlocking different routes on each run. Since collecting the required 255 coins cannot realistically be done in a single playthrough, the game encourages multiple attempts and route experimentation, giving the otherwise simple gameplay a surprisingly addictive quality.
