Black Tiger MD is an unofficial Sega Mega Drive port of Capcom’s 1987 arcade action-platformer, created by homebrew developer Rester159 using SGDK. The fantasy adventure follows a barbarian warrior fighting through eight stages on a quest to defeat three dragons. The Mega Drive version contains all eight stages as well as a new Boss Rush mode, and runs natively on the console rather than through emulation. The developer notes that compromises such as reduced colors and limited parallax scrolling were necessary to adapt the arcade game to the hardware.
The port itself is technically impressive, but the original game’s design can be extremely unforgiving. Later stages become crowded with enemies and hazards, encouraging slow progress while constantly attacking to clear the way ahead. Platforming is another source of frustration: momentum makes narrow platforms and difficult jumps unnecessarily troublesome. Unlimited continues make the difficulty manageable, but the repetitive soundtrack — essentially variations on the same theme across the eight stages — becomes exhausting during repeated attempts. It is an admirable port of a historically interesting arcade game, but not necessarily an enjoyable one by modern standards.
