Heavy Recoil

Heavy Recoil is a run-and-gun action game for the Sega Mega Drive, developed by Mikael Tillander, the creator of Tänzer and Twin Tiger Shark. Originally released by Wide Pixel Games for Xbox Live Indie Games in 2012, it was later rebuilt for Sega’s 16-bit console using SGDK. Inspired primarily by arcade classics such as Green Beret (Rush’n Attack). The Mega Drive version features 16 stages, branching routes, numerous bosses, and eight types of secondary attacks. Players can also collect stars, discover secrets, and rescue hostages to increase their scores.

The conversion is outstanding, combining beautiful pixel art, excellent music, responsive controls, and fast-paced action with consistently smooth performance. Stylish pseudo-3D transitions between stages add to its presentation, while the branching campaign and Mission Bingo mode provide considerable replay value. The latter challenges players to complete a row, column, or diagonal of objectives on a randomized 3×3 board. The main drawback is the unforgiving difficulty: players have only two lives, no continues, and die from a single hit, making practice and memorization essential. Fortunately, the precise controls and fair level design make repeated attempts genuinely enjoyable. Heavy Recoil stands among the finest modern releases for the Mega Drive.
