True Galactic Mission is a rare example of a modern vertical shoot ’em up for the Sega Mega Drive, a subgenre that’s surprisingly uncommon among recent homebrew releases. The game puts players in control of a space fighter with noticeable inertia, requiring careful movement and positioning rather than constant twitch reactions. This mechanic is one of the title’s more interesting ideas and works reasonably well in practice.
Beyond that, the experience is fairly average. Levels look similar to one another, the soundtrack quickly becomes repetitive, and boss fights tend to drag on, often boiling down to finding a safe spot and holding fire for several minutes. While the game features a stylish character selection screen at the start, the chosen pilot doesn’t seem to affect gameplay in any meaningful way.
