Lost in the 90s

Generals of the Yang Family: Clan of Heroes

Generals of the Yang Family: Clan of Heroes is a side-scrolling beat ’em up for the Sega Mega Drive with an unusual history. Originally released in Taiwan in the mid-1990s as an unlicensed title called Yi Men Ying Lie by Gamtec, the game was later acquired by Piko Interactive. In the 2010s, Piko fixed bugs, refined the gameplay, and officially re-released it under its current name.

Players can choose from four characters, each with different strengths and weaknesses. The gameplay is straightforward and somewhat barebones: small stages, a limited enemy roster, and a modest set of attacks. Visually, the game holds up well, and while the music is simple, it fits the historical atmosphere. As a beat ’em up, it’s very average — but as a polished release of an obscure Chinese bootleg, it’s an interesting piece of gaming history.
